From AI-Powered "Cultural Mashups" to Projecting the School of the Future
In my paper, “Teaching ESL Learners Descriptive Language Precision Through AI-Powered Cultural Mashups,” I introduced an approach where an AI image generator serves as a "mirror" for a learner's linguistic accuracy
I successfully adapted this approach to a 6th-grade learning context, where the grammatical focus was the Future Simple tense. Students were tasked with writing prompts to generate their vision of the "School of the Future."
How the activity connected to the core methodology:
Conceptual Mashup: Students combined a traditional school environment with futuristic, unexpected elements (e.g., robots, holograms)
. Grammar Precision as a Design Tool: To get the AI to accurately reflect their true vision, students had to use Future Simple structures precisely (e.g., "A school that will have robot teachers" or "Classes will change color").
Prompt Precision Challenge: After initial, overly simple attempts (e.g., "Robot school"), where the AI produced generic results, students were forced to refine their linguistic accuracy
. They added specific futuristic details and vocabulary, turning grammar practice into a high-stakes, creative design process .
Ultimately, this experiment reinforced the core essence of the methodology: the AI allowed students to see firsthand how their choice of English grammatical structures directly gave shape and color to their own imagination.
